The Ashippun EMS has assembled a EMS Rescue Squad Fund Raising Committee. The committee has been meeting and discussing how to raise the $150,000 needed to purchase the much need rescue squad.
This official press release was released on September 22, 2006.
The vehicle we currently use is a 1992 GMC chassis that was outfitted with the original box from out first EMS vehicle. We currently have fire department equipment such as air tanks and other firefighting equipment on it and we will continue to use it for that purpose. The new vehicle will be specifically for EMS. New laws have required EMTs to acquire additional skills and use more equipment than ever to help keep our community safe.
Here is a little information about the supplies and equipment we carry and use.
• Medications
- Epinephrine Shrinks blood vessels and opens airways. Is used to relieve severe allergic reactions.
- Glucagon Given to diabetic patients to raise their blood sugar. Makes the liver to release stored glycogen (sugar).
- Glucose A form of sugar, the body’s basic source of energy. When a person’s blood sugar is low (and is able to swallow on command) we can give oral glucose to bring their blood sugar back to normal.
- Asprin Prevents blood from clotting quickly, leading to increased survival from heart attacks.
- Albuterol Given to patients with closed airways. The medication opens bronchioles so the patients can breath easier
- OxygenPure oxygen is used as a drug to treat any patient whose medical or traumatic condition may cause them to be low on oxygen.
• 12 Lead Electrocardiogram
- Records electrical pulses of the heart for doctors to interpret and diagnose heart conditions.
- EKGs will be transmitted to the hospital
• Defibrillator
- Analizes heart rythums and may allow the EMT to shock the patient's heart into a normal rythum
- Is a Hospital type defibrillator for cardiac arrest
• Splinting Equipment
- Foam Also know as a Pro Splint. Helps in keeping bones stabilized
- Cervical Helps keep the vertabres in the neck in a netrual position
- Pediatric Used on children to help keep bones stabilized
- Traction A splint that pulls along the length of a leg to help stabilize the fractured bone and to reduce muscle movement in the limb. Traction splints are used on upper leg fractures.
- Kendrick Extrication Device (KED)- A piece of equipment useful for immobilizing sitting patients with possible injuries to the back
• Stretchers
-
Stair Stretcher Is a chair designed to help EMTs move a patient down narrow or long staircases.
- Long Board These are for patients that an EMT suspects might have a spinal injury. Also used to provide patient movement
- Soft Stretcher A stretcher made out of canvas or rubber used to help move patients that are to large for a regular stretcher. Also used in tight areas where a long board or stair chair may not be prefered
- Scoop Stretcher Two piece long board designed to snap together help move the patient on to a long board or cot. Commonly used with hip fractures
• Airway Management
-
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)Treats patients with respiratory distress by holding open the airway, enhancing gas exchange.
- Combi-Tube- Device This is a tube used for a person that is unconscious and not breathing. The tube is placed in the throat and keeps the airway open during CPR
- Oral Ph This may be placed in the mouth of a patient during CPR. Used to keep the tonge out of the airway
- Nasal PH This rubber tube may be placed in the nose of a patient to keep the airway open during CPR. Used when a patient has a gag reflex.
•Pediatrics
Pediatric patients have special needs because they are smaller than adults. We carry a Pediatric kit. In this kit we start with a Broselow tape which is a color-coded system that allows an EMT to lay the tape next to a child, measuring from head to toe. This allows the EMT to quickly determine the child's height and, factoring in body type, approximate weight. Then based on the measurements, the tape provides eight pre-calculated medication dosages and a list of equipment required for the child. There are eight color coded bars with specific equipment for each sized child.

The Ashippun EMS is a first responder unit that reponds to medical emergencies of all types in the area. They also stand by at structure fires in case medical assistance is necessary.
The First Responder unit began in 1975 with two firefighters that had an idea for a better way to help the community. They attended a basic EMT course and our growth has been positive since that meager start.
The rescue squad is part of the Ashippun Fire Department and each member must be a member of the department, but does not have to be a firefighter. Montyly drills are held with Stone Bank EMS and there are two joint drills per year with the fire department.
Sone Bank, Oconomowoc, Lebanon and Hartford EMS transport our patients. The Ashippun EMS is a member of the Dodge County EMS Association.
We currently have 18 State Certified Emergency Medical Technicians with five more currently in training. We also have five First Responders that recently finished their refresher course.
